Buckle up dear readers, it’s time for the most comprehensive list of pantry staples ever.

Basic pantry items every home should have? Vegan pantry staples? Keto pantry staples? Otherwise healthy pantry staples? We’ve got them all!

Through trial and error and extensive conversations with a variety of home cooks and meal preppers, we’ve decided to compile all our newfound knowledge about pantry essentials into this extensive article.

Let’s start from pantry basics everyone should have so we can move on to more advanced pantry stocking.


Basic pantry staples

Even though we talked about essential pantry items to stock up on before, this article wouldn’t be what it is if we didn’t lay the foundation with basic pantry staples every home needs.

Healthy pantry staples

To be fair, most - if not all - of the items from our basic staples list can be considered healthy if consumed in moderation.

However, if you are looking for food items that are truly beneficial for your health, we could refine that list a bit.

First, let's see what it means to have a healthy diet.

The World Health Organization (WHO) states that a healthy diet is one rich in fruits and vegetables. It also contains the right amount of legumes, nuts and seeds, and whole grains.

At the same time, WHO recommends everyone to limit their intake of fats (especially saturated fats and trans-fats), free sugars (those added by manufacturers, cooks, or consumers), and salt.

With that in mind, here is a list of five groups of healthy pantry staples for a well-balanced diet.

Fruits and vegetables

Unfortunately, a large number of fruits and vegetables are highly perishable (berries, for example) and cannot be kept in the pantry.

Since we won't be talking about items stored in the fridge or freezer, here is a limited list of healthy fruits and veggies that can last a while in a dry, cool place in the pantry:

  • Carrots
  • Sweet potatoes
  • Beets
  • Cabbage
  • Butternut squash
  • Rutabagas
  • Spaghetti squash
  • Apples
  • Pomegranates
  • Citrus fruits (lemons, oranges, tangerines, etc.)

Why are fruits and vegetables healthy?

These two food groups are a crucial source of vitamins, minerals, and dietary fiber.

According to the Harvard School of Public Health, they can lower blood pressure, reduce the risk of certain cancers, heart disease, stroke, eye problems, digestive problems, and more.


Beans, lentils, chickpeas, peanuts (yes, you read that right - peanuts are not nuts but legumes), soybeans, peas, and similar foods belong in a group called legumes.

Dried and canned versions of these foods have an exceptionally long shelf life. So long, in fact, that we added them onto our list of pantry items that will last you over a year.

Here are the legumes you should stock your pantry with:

  • Canned or dried beans (black beans, white beans, kidney beans, etc.)
  • Canned or dried chickpeas
  • Canned or dried lentils
  • Peanuts (and peanut butter, but the kind made without any added sugar)

Why are legumes healthy?

Legumes contain zero cholesterol , are low in fat, and high in potassium, magnesium, and folate. These three substances support the function of cells, muscles, and nerves. Folate promotes healthy red blood cell growth and formation in the body.

Legumes are also high in protein, making them an excellent meat alternative for those who are on a plant-based diet.

Nuts and seeds

Nuts and seeds can be added to salads, smoothies, baked goods, oatmeal dishes, and more.

They are high in calories, meaning they should be consumed in small amounts to maintain a healthy weight, but they’re jam-packed with nutrients that your body will thank you for.

Here is a list of nuts and seeds you can keep in your pantry:

  • Almonds
  • Walnuts
  • Hazelnuts
  • Macadamia nuts
  • Pine nuts
  • Pecans
  • Cashews
  • Pistachios
  • Flaxseed
  • Sunflower seeds
  • Pumpkin seeds
  • Chia seeds
  • Hemp seeds

Nut butters also belong in this category, but make sure to look for those without added sugars.

Why are nuts and seeds healthy?

Nuts and seeds contain a lot of antioxidants, fiber, vitamins, and minerals. They have the potential to aid in weight loss, lower cholesterol and triglyceride levels, and are beneficial against type 2 diabetes and metabolic syndrome.

Whole grains

The main difference between whole grains (such as brown rice) and refined grains (such as white rice) is that refined grains are stripped of valuable nutrients during the refining process. Therefore, refined grains don’t provide the same health benefits as whole grains.

Both of these can have a place in your diet, but an emphasis should be placed on whole grains.

Consider adding the following whole grains to your pantry:

  • Brown rice
  • Spelt
  • Bulgur

Why are whole grains healthy?

Compared to refined grains, whole grains contain antioxidants, B vitamins, vitamin E, fiber, and a whole range of phytonutrients and minerals (such as manganese and magnesium).

Consuming a diet with the right amount of whole grains can reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes, certain cancers (pancreatic, colorectal, and gastric cancer) and cardiovascular disease

Healthy fats

We already mentioned that the WHO advises limiting your intake of all fats, especially saturated and trans fats.

How can you know which fats are healthy for you and which are not?

Let's take the guesswork out of it. Here is a list of pantry foods with healthy fats:

  • Canned tuna
  • Canned salmon
  • Olive oil (extra virgin olive oil is the best option)
  • Avocado oil
  • Safflower oil
  • Sesame oil

What makes healthy fats healthy?

Healthy or 'good' fats are unsaturated fats (monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats). They reduce inflammation in the body, cholesterol levels, and stabilize the heart rhythm, among other benefits.

In contrast, 'bad' fats are saturated and trans fats. They increase the risk of disease, such as type 2 diabetes and coronary heart disease. They also create inflammation in the body.

Vegan pantry staples

The global vegan population is growing by the year. Just in the United States, the number of people who identify as vegan went up by 600% from 2014 to 2017.

And it's no wonder - the health benefits of veganism, vegetarianism, and plant-based diets are unquestionable:

However, the benefits of veganism, vegetarianism, and plant-based diets extend way beyond human health.

By bypassing the meat and dairy industries, these diets indirectly contribute to protecting animal welfare and reversing climate change.

The ketogenic diet is one of the most popular diets in the last few years. It is a low carb, high fat diet that assists in fat loss and contributes to lower risk of type 2 diabetes, cancer, high blood pressure, and more.
